A 'Mezuzot' or 'Mezuzah' is a container that holds a piece of parchment called a kiaf, which is inscribed Jewish verses from the Tora, specifically the prayers from Deuteronomy. It is affixed to the doorpost of Jewish homes to fulfill the mitzvah, a biblical commandment, meaning to, "Write the words of God on the gates and doorposts of your house." A mezuzah should be fixed to the doorpost of every living space in the house, not just the entrance door. Any room that has two doorposts and an overhead lintel require a mezuzah, so one should check with a rabbi. Bathrooms, closets, laundry room, boiler room, and so forth, however, do not require a mezuzah.

The mezuzah should be put up as soon as possible after moving in, and not later than thirty days. A temporary residence, that is, a place we reside in for less than thirty days, doesn’t require a mezuzah. A dormitory room, which a student considers a home away from home, should have a mezuzah.
